Career
I started as a political consultant in South Africa during the transition from apartheid to democracy
I joined Monitor Company (now Monitor Deloitte) and made the transition to strategy consultant, working on projects in the oil, mining, chemicals and retail sectors
As module, and later team leader, I worked on long-term strategic plans for the South African Departments of Health and Transport
After completing an MBA at INSEAD in France, I joined the Junior Executive Programme at Bertelsmann AG, the Germany media company, based in Gutersloh, Germany
I moved to London with my family and took up a position as strategist in Bertelsmann’s publishing arm, Random House
I returned to strategy consulting and over the next 12 years worked in the London offices of Monitor Company, CapGemini Consulting (now CapGemini Invent) and A.T. Kearney (now Kearney)
My work focused on strategy and transformation projects, covering corporate and business unit strategy, organisational structure, operating model design, change management and leadership development
Private sector clients were primarily in the consumer products and retail sectors in the UK and abroad
Public sector clients in the UK included the NHS and Department of Health, HMRC, DWP, Department of Justice, DIUS (now the Departments of Education and Business respectively) and the Cabinet Office
For the last 6 years I have worked as an independent strategy adviser, alone or in consortia, focused on strategy and organisational development and programme evaluation for agencies and organisations in the international development sector
My clients include development agencies such as DFID (now FCDO), Sida and USAID, NGOs such as Fairtrade International and the Global Water Partnership, and philanthropic foundations and impact investors such as Omidyar Network
